What is Capoeira?
apoeira is "played" on many different levels by means
of a physical dialogue in which movements are questions and answers between
two players. Like a family, Capoeira is a place for the acquisition of many
life skills. Hundreds of kids in Brazil without real families have discovered
their first supportive communities playing Capoeira in the streets.
Dance, combat, acrobatics, song and percussion are all interwoven. The circle
in which we play is the "roda" and represents our community.
Capoeristas move
with agility, grace and intelligence. They are capable of fast, exact kicks
and turns, as well as slow, playful acrobatics and traps. All over the globe,
wearing white pants or abadas, playing drums and the berimbau, bodies fly and
return to earth in the roda.
Capoeira inspires self-discipline, teamwork, agility, balance, endurance and
concentration. It is a give-and-take: the capoeira circle will accept anything
you have to give if you honor the circle through your own expression, exercising
freedom of speech and movement. |
